2x Research Studentships in Nanoengineering of Smart Materials

Two fully-funded 3.5-year DPhil (PhD) studentships for EU and UK applicants,

available from January 2019 (subject to eligibility requirements below)


Research Area

The studentships are part of a major ERC Consolidator Grant project: PROMOFS – “Nanoengineering and Processing of Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) Composites for Photonic Sensors” being undertaken by the University of Oxford under the European Commission Horizon 2020 funding programme.

This ambitious programme will develop and apply cutting-edge experimental and theoretical techniques to make new breakthroughs in the emerging field of Guest@MOF sensing technology. The vision is to harness the structural, physical and chemical diversity of MOFs to afford nanoengineering of revolutionary functional devices for detection of mechanical, chemical, thermal, electrical and optical stimuli.

The first studentship will focus on experimental studies involving novel materials processing, prototype device fabrication, and performance characterisation via advanced spectroscopy techniques.

The second studentship will concentrate on the theoretical formulation and implementation of computational modelling techniques (e.g. density functional theory) to gain insights into the physicochemical phenomena underpinning the novel systems.

Award Value 

Each studentship covers a stipend (tax-free maintenance grant) of £22,000 p.a. for the first year, and at least this amount for a further 2.5 years. This amount includes the University fees (c £4463 p.a. UK/EU students) and college fees (c £3215 p.a.).


Candidate Requirements

 Prospective candidates will be judged according to how well they meet the following criteria:

  • A first class or high upper second class honours degree in Engineering Science, Physics, Nanoscience, Materials or Chemistry;
  • Experience of materials-oriented research demonstrated by a publication in an international conference, journal, or a first-class final year project report;
  • Excellent English written and spoken communication skills

The following skills are desirable but not essential: 

  • Experience of nanomaterials characterisation techniques (for studentship 1);
  • Experience of ab initioquantum mechanical computational techniques (for studentship 2);
