Results of experiments in nanoscale wear for device applications as well as some novel nanomechanical device concepts using well-known but poorly exploited material properties will be presented. Our research is trying to answer whether we can experimentally perform directed engineering of nanostructures to yield functional, commercially viable devices. Though no straightforward answer will be provided, I shall present some results and ambitions of ongoing work by students and postdocs on NEMS, Phase Change Materials and pick-and-place nanomanufacturing.
