Calibration and Optimisation of Mechanical Models using Soft-Computing Techniques

The optimisation of complex problems  is a complex task, in which no properties such as continuity and differentiability are ensured or presenting additional constraints. This is the nature of many mechanical simulation or design problems, in which a finite element simulation models the problem but there exist a large number of free parameters to tune to find either a good calibration with experimental data or to optimise one or multiple design objectives.

Soft computing is an interdisciplinary field resulting from methods coming from operational research, artificial intelligence and statistics. Soft computing techniques provide methods to perform approximate calculations to problems otherwise unsolvable (within a reasonable amount of resources).

In this talk, I will present the approaches to use soft computing techniques to optimise and calibrate mechanical simulations. This approach uses two of the sets of techniques that are heuristic optimisation (in particular hybrid self-adaptive techniques) and the use of machine learning methods to design surrogate models to speed-up the whole design process.

The field of soft computing offers a useful arsenal of new methods to be combined with the state-of-the-art of simulation techniques in a synergetic mutually beneficial collaboration.

Professor Jose-Maria Pena

José M. Peña is Associate Professor at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) and Deputy Scientific Director of CeSViMa-UPM center (Supercomputing and Visualization Center of Madrid) and researcherat the Center for Biomedical Technology (CTB). He received his PhD in Computer Science from UPM and has been co- director of the Cajal Blue Brain project and coordinated the neuroinformatics activities. He takes part of the Human Brain Project initiative, an international consortium whose goal is to advance in the understanding of how the human brain works.


He is a member of the Intelligent Data Analysis (IDA) Council, associate and guest editor in various magazines and program chair in several conferences and workshops in the areas of data analysis, optimization, simulation, grid / cloud computing and data center systems and in the interdisciplinary fields of bio / neuroinformatics. He has developed his career in the area of data analysis and optimization of high-performance applications ranging from aeronautics to genomics and proteomics. In 2006, he received the FGUPM award as the Best Young Investigator for researchers under 35 years. He has published over 100 papers in journals and conferences and involved about a dozen national and international projects (leading half of them).
