Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Fluid Mechanics

IEB central Oxford, Engineering Science Department, Oxford
Grade 7: £31,076 - £38,183 p.a.

We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join the Fluid Dynamics Laboratory led by Professor Alfonso A Castrejon-Pita at the Department of Engineering Science (central Oxford). The post is funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and is for a fixed-term of 12 months.

The aim of the project is to investigate the breakup dynamics of externally perturbed liquid jets. Specifically, we will study the controlled breakup of liquid jets by (intermittent) external and self-induced perturbations, exploiting Rayleigh-Plateau instability and capillary-induced breakup. You will be responsible for the development and execution of experiments within the PI’s Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (part of the Department of Engineering Science), as well as contributing to the development of related mathematical/physical models in collaboration with the PI and project partners in the research group.

At the time of taking up the position, you should possess (or be near completion of) a PhD/DPhil in engineering, experimental physics or a related discipline, such as soft matter or applied mathematics. You should also be able to demonstrate a strong background in experimental fluid mechanics and in particular, in the development and execution of experiments and corresponding interpretation.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor Alfonso A Castrejon-Pita (alfonso.castrejon-pita@eng.ox.ac.uk).

Further information can be found at: www.eng.ox.ac.uk/jobs/home

You will be required to upload a covering letter/supporting statement, including a brief statement of research interests (describing how past experience and future plans fit with the advertised position), CV and the details of two referees as part of your online application.

Only applications received before 12.00 midday on 24 May 2017 can be considered.

The Department holds an Athena Swan Bronze award, highlighting its commitment to promoting women in Science, Engineering and Technology.

Applications from enthusiastic and well-qualified students and researchers are very welcome! By nature, the research of this group encourages an interdisciplinary approach, so applicants with background in Physics, Engineering, Maths, Geophysics, and related, and either working in theory, numerical simulation or experiments all offer exciting prospects. Do please send me an email to introduce yourself if you are interested in joining the group.

There are several excellent funding possibilities for graduate students, research visitors and postdoctoral researchers, which I'd encourage prospective people to apply for. Support from the host university is often needed: contact me in good time so we can discuss a possible application.

Some possibilities are:

For DPhil (PhD degree) at Oxford

For Fellowships, Postdocs, and Research exchanges/visits (at Oxford)

Chances are that your home country provides scholarships for graduate studies overseas well.
