Professor Felix Leach

Felix is a recently appointed Associate Professor whose most recent experience has been as the lead Post-Doctoral Researcher in the Centre-of-Excellence for Compression Ignition Engine Combustion Research, a high profile collaboration between Oxford and Jaguar Land Rover ( Felix completed a DPhil at Oriel College, and an MEng at Exeter College. He is a Chartered Engineer and Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Member of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

Diesel engines
Felix's current focus is on Diesel engines, focussing on NOx and Soot emissions alongside fuel efficiency. The Diesel CoE has built one of the most advanced engine test facilities of any university in the UK, and gives measurement capabilities that are world leading. Recent work has included looking at the effects of stepped piston bowls and variable inlet valve trains. Currently Felix and the CoE are pursuing ultra low NOx emissions from a Diesel engine.

GDI engines
Felix's DPhil (PhD) was on particulate emissions from GDI engines under the supervision of Prof Richard Stone. The work, funded by EPSRC and Jaguar Land Rover, focused on the effect of fuel composition on particulate (soot) emissions from car engines. The thesis validated an equation linking the fuel composition to the emissions on a variety of car engines and included collaborative work between Oxford University, Jaguar Land Rover, Shell, and the University of Bath.
The results of his experiments, demonstrating variations in the current regulations for testing new cars, were fed through ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers' Association) into the recommendations for the now current EU6 reference fuel specification – effectively influencing the EU law behind emissions tests on new cars.
The work was the subject of numerous academic publications, and was featured by the SMMT (the UK car manufacturers and vendors industry association) in 2014-15.
Felix's DPhil was awarded the Richard Way Memorial Prize for the best PhD Thesis in Engine Research submitted in 2014. The prize is awarded by the UnICEG (Universities Internal Combustion Engine Group). UnICEG is a group of researchers in internal combustion engine research and development, membership comprises over 100 organisations with approximately equal representation from universities and industry.

Other research, in collaboration with JLR, has included the effect of fuel composition on particulate emissions (including developing a PN index), the effect of various biofuels (in particular Ethanol, Methanol, and Butanol) on particulate emissions, high water content aqueous ethanol, and particulate emissions from a highly boosted engine (part of a TSB project to reduce CO2 emissions from cars by 35%).

Felix is a Tutor at Keble College (  He joined Keble in 2016 after four years at Oriel College; prior to that taught at Somerville and St Hugh's colleges. At Keble he teaches Thermofluids (Papers P4 and A4), Engineering and Society (Paper B2) and parts of other papers including Mathematics. Felix also teaches undergraduates at some other colleges.

Outside of Engineering his interests include music and flying – Felix holds a private pilot’s licence.
