Research Assistantship

Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Intelligent Underground Construction Monitoring

Grade 7: £32,817 - £40,322 p.a., Closing Date: 2 March 2020 12:00

We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Intelligent Underground Construction Monitoring to join the Civil Engineering research group at the Department of Engineering Science (central Oxford). The post is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and is fixed-term for 22 months, starting from 1 June 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The successful candidate will contribute to a collaborative research project between Oxford University and industry partners for underground construction applications including, but not limited to, tunnelling, deep excavations and large-diameter shafts. They will develop bespoke ‘intelligent’ fibre optic monitoring systems in the Oxford geotechnical laboratory and deploy them on live construction projects in the UK and possibly Ireland. They will play a significant role in the processing and quality assurance of the monitored data, as well as the further interpretation, analysis and reporting. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to contribute to complementary laboratory testing and/or numerical analysis.

We are looking for candidates who hold (or are near to completion of) a relevant PhD/DPhil, along with appropriate experience. You will need the ability to execute high-quality field monitoring as well as the ability to evaluate, interpret and report monitored data within a proposed framework to a high standard.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Brian Sheil using the email address below.

You will be required to upload a covering letter/supporting statement describing how past experience and future plans fit with the advertised position, a detailed CV and the contact details of two referees as part of your online application.

Applications must be received before 12.00 midday on 2 March 2020.

The Department holds an Athena Swan Bronze award, highlighting its commitment to promoting women in Science, Engineering and Technology.
